Rurral by Catherine Alliott. A light hearted and enjoyable read, starting with the death of Phil, Poppy Shilling’s husband and as the story progresses, we learn more about the background to her marriage and the reasons for her lack of grief in his loss.
I loved the main character and her Dad she was very easy to relate to, it was great watching her bumble through her emotions and find herself in the end. My kind of book.
She was duly fired. Share your thoughts with other customers. I read this several years ago, in paperback, but it’s still enjoyable the 2nd rura, around.
Poppy has enough on her plate to sort out her own life but she still manages to get involved in her friend Jenny’s marriage, her other friend’s acrimonious divorce, and other assorted girlfriend problems. Aug 04, Tamara Martinez rated it it was ok.

It will be good to see how she comes out of the situation with her Mother-in-law and the woman who was her husband’s mistress! Poppy is a young wife and mother who has settled into a lacklustre marriage cztherine Phil, a man she doesn’t really like but catheriine fits the bill as a family provider, although a tight-fisted oneand a less-than-doting father. I like the way her characters weave and mingle through the story. Although we are all aware that fiction is just that – and that fiction is pure escapism – there are surely less ridiculous ways to portray Phil’s death.

Poppy decides she is going to start getting involved in activities and joins the local church choir and the world’s worst book club.
